San Antonio's NBC affiliate is taking a cue from hit reality show "The Biggest Loser" and launching a 12-week televised weight-loss competition here. The series will debut on WOAI's "San Antonio Living" on Feb. 21 and be titled "San Antonio Living's Biggest Loser." Executive producer Dawn Cole hopes the weekly telecasts and online companion pieces — allowing the whole city to participate — will put a dent in our rep as one of America's fattest cities. (In 2007, San Antonio was ranked No. 2 in the Men's Fitness magazine annual poll, right behind the absolute fattest of the year, Las Vegas.) In any event, more than 160 people lined up at the station Wednesday — in answer to a "Living" call for contestants — to audition for the six spots.
Dr. Mirta Roses Sworn In For 2nd Term At PAHO, USA
Dr. Mirta Roses, the first woman in charge of the oldest health institution in the world, begins her second term as Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), saying "As we envision the future, we can dare to dream about events that will become a part of the long history of successes achieved by those who came before us." In a ceremony with authorities from several countries and regional organizations, Dr. Roses took the oath of office from the Minister of Health of Chile, Dr. María Soledad Barría, who was President of the 27th Pan American Sanitary Conference. "This is above all a day of commitment. Today I renew my oath to devote myself tirelessly, day by day, hour by hour, to keeping PAHO at the forefront of the response to the regional and global challenges in public health and, particularly, to serve as an instrument for bringing good health to the most neglected, vulnerable, marginalized, and excluded populations," she said.
Rajat Kapoor to host a quiz show on TV
So does he want to act in TV serials too? "No, never," prompt comes the reply. "I find the economics of TV industry very bizarre, so I don't have any desire to work in these TV serials, he says. "I have certain sensibility of cinema and so I deliberately do roles which are more true and real. I don't like characters which come out of Mars," he adds. So what does he think about his next directorial venture "Mithya," which will hit the theatres next month? "It is a concept based on a conversation between two mythological characters, i.e Narad and Lord Vishnu. During the conversation Lord Vishnu explains Narad the meaning of 'Maya'. It was from there that I got the inspiration for the script of the film," says Kapoor. The new-age director, whose films, "Ragu Romeo" and "Mixed Doubles" touched a chord with the critic reveals that he wanted to make the film nine years back with Naseeruddin Shah .
Public Intellectuals, Inc.
In the end, these newly minted corporate intellectuals have the potential not only to alter the meaning and nature of the American intellectual, but also to capture, as Emerson says, the world's eye and the world's heart. Hopefully, this is something that they will be able to do without seriously jeopardizing the pursuit of knowledge. .
52 Weekends Redux
Our next 52 Weekends issue (scheduled for spring 2007) will include a full update of all destinations. Our thanks to all the readers who wrote us with praise, suggestions, complaints and corrections. Sami YoussefThank you so much for your wonderfully detailed, perfectly written profile of Sami Youssef. Although I was certainly aware of his music before you profiled him [A Voice for Peace, by Senior Writer Hadia Mostafa, March 2006, page 104], I knew very little about him. I have to say I was somewhat shocked to find him on your cover. After all, your previous months story was a heart wrenching investigative piece [Playing With Fire, by Senior Writer Azza Khattab, January 2006, page 102] and here you have a celebrity? But the story was richly written and beautifully told and certainly deserved to be there.
Habs raise Hall of Famer Gainey's No. 23 to rafters
I learned I'm more comfortable now with a shirt and tie than in hockey equipment." Gainey, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, singled out former teammates Doug Jarvis and Guy Carbonneau for special mention. The two centers, both members of Montreal's current coaching staff, were Gainey's linemates for almost his entire 16-year career. "These are my superstars, these two here," said Gainey, who won the inaugural Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1977-78, his first of four straight awards as the league's best defensive forward. Carbonneau, the Canadiens current head coach, won the award three times in five years from 1988-92, including each of Gainey's last two seasons with the team. Jarvis, Montreal's associate coach, was a junior teammate in Gainey's native Peterborough, Ont., rejoining him for the Canadiens' run of four straight Stanley Cups from 1976-79.

Restaurant fights to switch
How can an 18-year-old go and buy a pack of cigarettes but can't come in here to eat? It should be a business owner's decision on what goes on in their business," said McKnight's husband, David. Charles Jetter, owner of Gus's Restaurant at 37 Market Square, immediately went 21 years and older after the ban went into effect. "It's working so far," Jetter said. With a pack of cigarettes in hand, West Haven patron Penny Howe was all smiles when she heard the news Thursday. "I'm elated," said Howe, who has only been to the restaurant three or four times since the ban. "I'm so proud of her. For people to tell her what to do isn't right." Janice Grasty, who was eating lunch with her 2-year-old son, said she probably won't be back because of her kids. "Smoke does travel, but I think the decision should be left to the business owner," said Grasty, a nonsmoker.
