If any coaches have questions about the process, they can e-mail me or call me and I will clarify it.

Question: With Pike going 6-0 and defeating Columbus North 33-14, do you feel that this team really has a chance to go undefeated this year? (Kyle from Indianapolis)

Answer: Pike has put itself in an excellent position to go undefeated in the regular season. The playoffs at some point will offer a higher level of competition, and Pike will have to show it can succeed against those teams. But it has shown it is capable of a great year. We'll just have to see what happens. .

Rush Gives Up?

His vision of a universal health care system is one that will be sufficiently generous that even families in, say, the 89th percentile of the income distribution never feel inclined to make private expenditures for additional services on top of what the government provides and that won't involve any potentially innovation-starving price controls. That, I'm inclined to agree, really would be very expensive.

"And if you could really pay for such a system by severely means-testing Social Security benefits I wouldn't have a particular objection to that."

Bad News Bear

No. Proto-imperialist? Maybe.

While we're unlikely to see a rivalry as bitter as in the permafrost days of the Cold War, Russia and America will clash on a host of issues.

Russia's feisty President Vladimir Putin steps down in March but he's expected to keep the real power, probably re-emerging as prime minister or "national leader." Certainly, his handpicked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, will closely cleave to "Putinism."

Since taking office in 2000, Putin worked to stabilize the Motherland and re-establish Russia as a global force - on par with the United States, China and the European Union. Medvedev's Kremlin is sure to continue pushing back against any "encroachment" on Russia's traditional sphere of influence in Eastern and Central Europe, the Baltic, the Caucasus and Central Asia - what Moscow calls its "near abroad."

Most recently, Russia objects to the United States putting a radar in the Czech Republic and deploying 10 interceptors in Poland to counter the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile threat.

Tending to cycling's emergencies

Slipstream's team doctor Prentice Steffen received his first race emergency call of the season early this year while at the Tour of Qatar. In the fifth stage, the team's lead-out train went down when Swede Magnus Backstedt clipped a wheel in the final kilometre and fell, taking down his team-mates Chris Sutton and Julian Dean. Steffen, who was in the second caravan car, was on the scene quickly, and was able to make sure the riders received the proper care. With his riders on the tarmac in agony, Steffen swiftly put the skills he's honed during his years of emergency medicine practice.

"In part, it proved why it's good to have a team doctor at the race. If I hadn't been there, he'd have been hauled off to some local hospital and who knows how long it would have been before he was treated," Steffen said.

Made in Maryland

Nicole Kidman and Daniel (James Bond) Craig star in an update of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," part of which was filmed in Baltimore over an estimated 45 days in fall of 2005. For a change, Baltimore wasn't just a stand-in for another city, as much of the movie takes place in Charm City.

Ladder 49 (2003)
Joaquin Phoenix portrays a firefighter trapped in a burning building. Confronted with death, the firefighter recalls the events of his life. Look for scenes filmed in Baltimore including the 2003 St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Shamrock 5K Race. Other scenes were filmed around Curtis Bay just south of the Inner Harbor. Directed by Jay Russell. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta.

Liberty Heights (1999)
Barry Levinson's fourth film in his Baltimore series.
