I love my smoke-free childhood" will launch today, World Cancer Day. The campaign will encourage parents to avoid smoking at home or in a car; avoid smoking while pregnant or in the vicinity of someone who is pregnant; use a smoke-free daycare; and avoid smoking altogether. The initiative will also incite parents to caution their children to stay away from second-hand smoke and places that allow smoking and teach them that there is no safe level of second-hand smoke. "There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and brief exposure can be harmful. This is the driving message of the initiative," says Claire Neal, the LAF's director of education and program development. "Working together, we will advance awareness of the health risks of secondhand smoke to children and contribute to a healthier society for generations to come." "I love my smoke-free childhood" marks the first full-year focus on a cancer-prevention habit endorsed by the World Cancer Campaign, a five-year movement launched globally on World Cancer Day 2007.
Crash raises issues of fake IDs, immigration
Questions about Alianiss Nunez Morales' identity don't surprise Minnesotans who work with immigrants, saying it points to a flourishing statewide trade in false documents. It also points to the need to tighten sanctions for using fake documents and crack down on illegal immigration, argue some political leaders. "To be honest, people can get false documents quickly and easily,'' said Sgt. Kevin Flynn, of the Worthington Police Department, which has experience with dubious documents. "It's basically just word of mouth. People can go out and buy a birth certificate and a Social Security card, and then ... obtain other forms of ID.'' A woman originally identified as Morales was charged in connection with the crash that killed four children on Tuesday near Cottonwood.
New Latah Bistro Classes
Join Heather Black-DuPree, owner of Latah Bistro, for the Tastes of Tuscany cooking classes every Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m. The classes feature recipes from Siena, Italy where Black-Dupree recently took classes herself. "Heather's style incorporated a passion for food with stories, trivia and traditional cooking knowledge," the Duprees said in a news release. Future classes will include Latah Bistro Chef David Blaine and other chefs from the restaurant. The restaurant is closed so students use the kitchen and dining room for the private classes. When they arrive they'll meet other students, put on an apron and then start cooking. Recipes will be provided along with wine to sip and appetizers. At the end of the night, the group sits down to the three-course meal they made that night.

Coach's Corner: Santos in eighth year at soph helm
My junior year we took second and my senior year we went undefeated in league and finished second in the (Sac-Joaquin Section) and lost our (Northern California playoff) game by one point all the way up in Redding. We played our section championship game at UC Davis. Now the girls play those games at Arco Arena; we got Davis, but it was still exciting. UD: The section final that year, a 50-42 loss to Del Oro of Loomis, was frustrating for Sonora. AS: Our center, Anne Zimmerman, got into foul trouble. We should have won that game. UD: How did you get into coaching? AS: I ran in to Shelly Kiriluk (then the head sophomore coach) one day and she asked if I would come down and be her assistant. When she left I became the head coach (in 2000-01). UD: Kiriluk, who returned as the varsity assistant last season, is an outstanding coach.
The Navasota Examiner & Grimes County Review
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Don't forget to get that special someone that gift they've been looking for. The monthly board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21 in the library at 7 p.m. The Richards and W.E. Hall meeting will be April 12 at Ryan's Steakhouse in Conroe at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, was a special day for my sister, Marilyn Hill. Her son Ricky, fianc Lauren and grandbaby Jayden took her out to eat at Pappasitos. Well of course this didn't stop me from celebrating again. My nephew said if I came, he would treat me as well, so my daughter Brinelle and I met them and we had a blast. My mom Annie was treated to a delicious meal as well. I would like to tell my nephew thanks for a great outing! Please continue to pray for the sick and shut-ins.
